When I end up selling my Mini, I will end up needing a different car asap. So I’m enlisting you guys to help me.
THE RULES:
THE CANNOTS
- Cannot be an SUV or crossover
- Cannot have more than 350 hp
- Cannot cost more than $10,000
- Cannot be Bland
THE MUSTS
- Can be anything but an SUV really
- Can be a little bit unreliable
- Can be Manual Transmission
- Must be able to go around corners like a Mini
Unless you guys think otherwise, I’m kinda thinking about a Porsche Boxster. I drove a first gen this week and it was the sweetest car that I’ve driven. And that Flat-Six had me addicted.
So give it your all

Not sure how old you want to go but as someone who learned stick mainly on my moms two cooper S’s and then was looking at boxsters, check out the Z3. I found a Z3 Coupe and its awesome because its a hatch, pretty reliable as long as you follow the maintenance schedule, and it can corner like a motherfucker. Plus it still looks good and decently modern especially with the Angel Eye upgrade. I personally don’t like soft tops which is why it was a perfect car for me. There aren’t many other RWD manual coupe hatchbacks lol. Hard to find but worth it. http://www.z3coupebuyersguide.com/listing?ListingID=11935
I was between my Coupe and a Boxster and I can’t say I’ve ever regretted my decision

The 986 is a great car, just budget for the IMS bearing like a maintenance item and be prepared for it to nickel and dime you in other ways .

I’m not a M.I.A.T.A guy but, Miata kind of seems like the answer here..

The under $10k part is tough, but I've always wanted a Abarth Fiat 500. Certainly the Boxster is nice, but you do not want to have to Grace the door of a Porsche service department - trust me.

We all know what THE ANSWER is...

you just got rid of your mini for being to expensive to fix
get a co rolla or a camry
sorry mate... but bland is the life for you if you want cheap and reliable

Probably can’t handle quite like a Mini, but since it’s not my money I’m playing with (in case of repairs), how about a Suzuki Kizashi? Definitely won’t be something you see every day
![]() 10/18/2018 at 10:08 |

I waaaaaant one of these. Someday I’ll take the leap.

I’ll sell you my Abarth so I can get that Z3 coupe!

$10K will still buy you one hell of a bicycle these days. Two if you are especially thrifty. Guaranteed to outcorner your Mini and easily pass it on a long twisty downhill.

I know a person selling a mini....

Maintaining a cheap Porsche, especially for DD duties sounds like a nightmare to me.
This one only has 50k miles.

Autozam AZ-1. Will corner even better than the mini.

Post of the day.

Multiple smart cars. Ones in decent condition could be had for about $3k, so you could buy three of them!

My first thoughts would be NB or NC Miata. Boxster is an awful idea, unless you have an additional $10k set aside for repairs throughout the year. But considering you’re getting rid of your Mini for repair costs, I wouldn’t do a Boxster. Other ideas I haven’t seen: MR2 Spyder, Civic Si, TSX with a manual, Pontiac Solstice/Saturn Sky, Suzuki Cappuccino, Honda Beat, BMW Z3, Mazdaspeed3, Honda S2k, I’ve even seen FRS/BRZ for $10k or just under.
If you want something like your Mini, it’s gonna be a small lightweight coupe, but not necessarily super powerful. The struggle is finding something that hasn’t been abused.
Here’s the absolute worst idea:

To come in under budget you may have to buy one in Japan and import it though.

$10k WRX sounds like one hell of a gamble.

The only big issue really is the subframe needs reinforcing on these but other than that they’re pretty bulletproof. They’re sweet and I’m jealous that europe still gets new versions

Oooooo good idea

You know what you have to buy now

Yup buy a BMW instead... wait that doesn’t seem right.

If you dont want the typical answer, Miata, I would look at
FWD
Civic Si 8th gen (K20Z3) (9th gen isnt as fun and the K24 is problematic)
Mazda 3speed
Focus ST (not sure if they are close to $10k)
Fiesta ST
TL (really any of them are good but Type S is best)
FIAT 500 Abarth (Reliability concerns)
Honda Fit (Really slow but fun to sling around)
RWD
E46 coupes.
E30
MR2
350z
BRZ? (are these getting close to 10k?)
AWD
TL SH-AWD (weight starting to be an issue)
WRX or STi (but good luck on finding one not beat to shit)
EVO (Kind of a joke because you’re not find one for 10K)
Lastly say no to the Boxer unless you can get it dirt cheap. Reason why here

The NA would be fine as well. I'm biased though.

I really kind of want that ute.
![]() 10/18/2018 at 11:57 |

just imagine the head gasket problems
![]() 10/18/2018 at 11:58 |

This is the best actual response yet because i am not getting a miata

Glad to see you’re finally starting to see the light ;)
![]() 10/18/2018 at 12:12 |

FoST is 16k at the least on autotrader (dot com slash oversteer)
![]() 10/18/2018 at 12:13 |
|
The head gasket issue on turbos is way overblown.
![]() 10/18/2018 at 12:16 |
|
There is nothing wrong with that
![]() 10/18/2018 at 12:18 |

It’s been done better:
![]() 10/18/2018 at 12:21 |

yeah Id drive that. id ditch the Town & Country wheels for soem thign more turcky tho. probably these TJ wheels. Always been a fan of them. My cousin has them on his lifted CRV and they look great.
![]() 10/18/2018 at 12:24 |
|
Dodge had OEM wheels like that:
![]() 10/18/2018 at 12:31 |
|
the Omni GHLi rigth? I also really liked the Spirit R wheels especially when color matched.
![]() 10/18/2018 at 12:32 |
|
my thought is a newer car would probably be better for his situation but NA Miatas are always good!
![]() 10/18/2018 at 12:35 |
|
I’m partial to my 94 Miata. You get the bigger 1.8L engine, but it still has flip up headlights :-)
![]() 10/18/2018 at 12:54 |
|
Agreed on the Miata part , I u nderstand the following but its played out way to much. Personally I want something different, why my line up is all over the place.
And to your other comment, I wasn’t sure on the FoST but threw it out anyway. I know the FiSTs are getting close.
Another off the wall suggestion is a E92 328i or 330i. Great looking cars and the NA I-6 are pretty reliable. Their down side is BMW electronics and BMW parts cost.
![]() 10/18/2018 at 14:02 |

They’re rare everywhere. Thats part of the awesomeness

Whats problematic about the 9th Gen Civics? I love any ammo to debate with my friend who owns one and constantly claims its better/nicer than my BMWs lol
![]() 10/18/2018 at 23:16 |

K24s eat oil. It has oil blow by issues due to poor piston rings. Just Google k24 oil consumption, way too many to list. And the 9th gen had a stupid vt ec indicator light (as a Honda person, literally the stupidest gimic). Suspension is a downgrade from 8th (to be far the 8th gen was super agressive ) and overall its considered a lateral move.
The k24 has more torque but the k20 is more revered as a better motor and is more REV happy with a 8300 redline.(Why people like the S2k with 2.0L over 2.2L) Also from the k20 (2.0L) to k24 (2.4L) horse power is only improved by 4.....
If it’s a 2012 ( 9th gen’s first year) it was widely considered as a cost cut model. It was dropped from consumer reports for the first time in 20 some years. Honda had to reel and basically redesign it in less than a year. Read NA facelift in wiki article below (it’s down a bit)

Actually not sure as I thought the Omnis were 4 lug...........They’re called “Pizza” wheels among the community, but after looking, it seems you are correct!
I’ve always loved color matched “Snowflakes”!
